Smog Check Pricing and Services
At Hernandez Smog, we provide honest, efficient, and state-compliant smog inspections. Below is a breakdown of our pricing based on your vehicle's model year and the testing required under California law.
1996–1999 Vehicles
Price: $81.75 + Certificate Fee
What’s Included:
OBD-II Diagnostic Scan
These early OBD-II vehicles still require computer diagnostics to check for codes, readiness, and proper system operation.Tailpipe Emissions Test (Dynamometer Test)
Your vehicle is tested on a rolling dynamometer to simulate driving while measuring emissions such as CO, HC, NOx, and O2 from the tailpipe.Visual Inspection
All visible emissions control systems are inspected for tampering, missing components, or malfunctions.
Why This Test:
Although these cars have OBD-II systems, the state of California still requires a tailpipe test due to limitations in early OBD-II technology.

2000 & Newer Vehicles
Price: $41.75 + Certificate Fee
What’s Included:
OBD-II Computer Diagnostic Scan
We connect to your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system to check for emission-related fault codes, verify that all readiness monitors are complete, and ensure the check engine light is off.Visual Inspection
We inspect key emissions components such as the catalytic converter, EGR valve, PCV system, and other required parts to ensure everything is intact and functioning.
Why This Test:
Vehicles from 2000 and newer are equipped with advanced OBD-II systems that self-monitor emissions performance. No tailpipe or dynamometer test is required.
1995 & Older Vehicles
Price: $111.75 + Certificate Fee
What’s Included:
Tailpipe Emissions Test (Dynamometer Test)
Since these vehicles are not equipped with OBD-II, we directly measure emissions under load using a rolling dynamometer.Visual Inspection
We inspect all emissions-related components including the catalytic converter, EGR system, air injection, vacuum hoses, and more.EVAP System Pressure Test
A pressure machine is connected to the fuel filler neck or tank area to detect fuel vapor leaks in the gas cap, charcoal canister, and fuel lines.
Why This Test:
Older vehicles require the most comprehensive testing due to the lack of onboard diagnostics. These tests ensure your vehicle meets current emissions standards.
Certificate Fee
The State of California requires a certificate for all passing vehicles. This fee is $8.25 and is added to the cost after the smog inspection is completed.
Why Prices Vary
Smog check pricing is based on the time, equipment, and level of inspection required. Older vehicles demand more labor and more detailed testing procedures, including the use of a dynamometer and manual system checks.
